Spiel des Jahres winner: Dominion

In other awards news, the German Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) for 2009 has been announced. Aimed at the large German family game market, the Spiel des Jahres winner is selected for its broad appeal as much as its innovative game play.

This year’s winner is Dominion, the card drafting game of kings. Drop in to the store and check this one out: the award is well deserved, and appeals to the hard-core gamer more than some previous winners as well. With a new base set/expansion on the way soon (Dominion: Intrigue), this system promises to keep growing too.

Gaming can save your life

Do your friends give you a hard time about staying up all night playing games? Be sure to pass this little story along, then.

We’ve been hearing about David Rhode’s and Tahir Luddin’s escape from the Taliban for the past week or so. And while it did involve planning, a drop of several meters, crossing hostile territory at night and the risk of friendly fire when arriving at a Pakistani outpost, it also included the critical step of disabling their guards. According to the New York Times, they did this by keeping their guards awake late into the night, playing Draughts (Checkers). When the guards finally fell asleep, the two were able to make their escape.

So remember, your next all-nighter isn’t a frivolous waste of time. It’s Special Training!

New factions for Monsterpocalypse

Privateer Press has announced the next block of Monsterpocalypse, for release in October: Monsterpocalypse Now. For their second year, they are introducing a second block of six factions, bringing new options to each of the six agendas in the game. While the factions haven’t been fleshed out yet, or even assigned to agendas, some of the names are highly suggestive. The list: Elemental Champions, Empire of the Apes, Subterran Uprising, Savage Swarm, Tritons, and UberCorp International. Sounds like we’ll be seeing those giant apes and giant insects people have been looking for.

The distribution of figures will be similar to the initial set, Rise: Monster boosters with one of 12 monster pairs, and Unit/Building boosters with one of nine buildings, and four of 36 units.

New Munchkin is coming to town

You’d better watch out.
You’d better not cry.
You’d better not pout.
Or you’re gonna die.
That’s right, Santa Claus is making his way into Munchkin. A mini-expansion of 15 cards, this is scheduled for release in September, giving you plenty of time to fill your stockings with them. Buy them for other people, you say? That doesn’t sound very Munchkin to me…
